Board games are amongst the oldest of games, with the first known board game, called Senet, created in Egypt around 3500 B.C. Eventually cultures in Europe adopted various board games for entertainment. Today there are a large variety of board games available for family fun. The latest rendition of these games is “online play”, where you play the same game, but on the computer, often with someone via the internet.
Strategy board games are those games that involve a considerable amount of strategy to win, not just mere luck. Checkers and chess, for example, require a winning strategy, not luck, to win. Other games, such as Sorry, Chutes and Ladders, or Yahtzee, require a good “roll of the dice”, and almost no strategy, in order to win. Most games, like Monopoly (1935 First Edition Reproduction) or
Risk 1959, require a bit of both. Having said that, if you never get a “break” with the dice rolls, any good strategy you might have will go “out the window”.
Classic board games are those games that have stood the test of time. They were popular with our grandparents, and are still popular today. Two such examples are Risk and Battleship, which have evolved in various ways (such as online play) over the years, but still revolve around the same strategy and game play. Other games in this category are: Life, Clue Reinvention, Monopoly, Connect Four, Sorry! Game
, and Stratego.
While the exact origin of the “deck of cards” is not known, it is very probably that playing with cards was invented by the Chinese when they began shuffling paper money into various combinations…the 7th to 10th century A.D. Moving to the Western World, the history of English playing cards probably dates to the 15th century. The first documentary evidence that we have to their existence is in an Act of Parliament, in which domestic card makers were complaining about the importation of foreign cards.
While the actual origin of playing cards has been lost to history, it is highly likely that they were invented by the Chinese shortly after the invention of paper. Modern cards probably arrived in Europe in the late 1300′s, and quickly spread throughout the continent. Originally created by hand, one at a time, they were therefore very expensive. Popular card playing games include: hearts, bridge, poker, and rummy.

Monopoly is a classic board game, in fact the most commercially-successful board game in the history of the United States, with over 485 million players worldwide. It is published by Parker Brothers (a subsidiary of Hasbro).
It is named after the economic concept of a “monopoly”, which is the domination of a market by a single entity. Since Charles Darrow patented the game in 1935, during the height of the Great Depression, over 750 million people have played it. Games Magazine has inducted it into it’s “Hall of Fame”.
In 1941 the British Secret Service had John Waddington Ltd., the licensed manufacturer of the game outside of the United States, created a special edition of the game. It would be sent to World War II prisoners of war held by the Nazis. It was special in that hidden inside were compasses, real money, maps, and other useful objects for escaping. They made their way to the prisoners via fake charity groups created by the secret service.
The original version of the game, first sold by Charles Darrow, then by Parker Brothers, consisted of 40 spaces containing twenty-eight properties, three Chance spaces, three Community Chest spaces, an Income Tax space, a Luxury Tax space, and four GO squares in the corners. In the United States version of the game, the properties are named after locations near Atlantic City, New Jersey.
Hasbro conducts a Worldwide Monopoly tournament from time-to-time. The first Monopoly World Championship took place in New York, at a place called Grossinger’s Resort, in November, 1973. The last person crowned world champion was Antonio Zafra of Spain. He won the tournament in 2004. The next World Championship will be held on October 21 & 22, 2009 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Forty-two players will be competing for not only the championship, but a cash prize of $20, 580 in US currency.
Hasbro also sells a Deluxe Edition of the game. It is very similar to the classic edition, but has wooden houses and hotels, and gold-toned tokens. It also has one token in addition to those in the classic edition…a railroad locomotive. The Deluxe Edition also includes a card carousel (which holds the title deed cards), and money that is printed with two colors of ink.
In 2000, the New York toy store FAO Schwartz sold a custom version of the game called “One-Of-A-Kind Monopoly” for $100,000. It came with a locking attache case made with Napolino leather and lined in suede. It included:
1) 18-carat gold tokens, houses, and hotels.
2) Rosewood playing board.
3) Street names written in gold leaf.
4) Emeralds around the Chance Icon.
5) Sapphires around the Community Chest.
6) Rubies in the brake lights of the car on the “Free Parking Space”.
7) Real negotiable United States currency.

Chess is another wonderful old game that has been around a long while. Chess is a board game that is played between two players. Originating from an Indian version of a similar game, the current form of chess emerged in Southern Europe during the 15th century. It is one of the world’s most popular games, played by millions of people.
The game is played on a flat platform called a chessboard. It is a checkered-board with an 8×8 grid. Each player controls sixteen pieces, one player controlling the white version, and the other player controlling the black version. These sixteen pieces include: one king, one queen, two knights, two rooks, two bishops, and eight pawns. The overall objective of the game is to checkmate the opposing player’s king. This means that his king is under immediate attack, and there is no way that he can get away.
Chess is commonly believed to have originated in India during the Gupta Empire via a game called caturanga. Around 600 AD, in Sassanid Persia, the game became shatranj, and the rules were developed further. The game reached Western Europe and Russia, and by 1000 AD it had spread throughout Europe. Around 1475 several changes were made to the game, and it became essentially the game that we now know and love.
In the Middle Ages and during the Renaissance, chess was part of “noble culture”. Referred to as the “King’s Game”, it was used to teach war strategy. Many of the elaborate chess sets used by the English aristocracy have been lost to history, but others, such as the Lewis chessmen, have survived the years.
Competitive chess started in the 16th century, and today is a recognized sport of the International Olympic Committee. In 1886, the first World Chess Champion, Wilhelm Steinitz, claimed his title. The current World Champion is Viswanathan Anand.
When digital computers started to materialize in the 1950s, chess programs started to appear as well. Chess, being a very logical game, is well suited to the “switch off and switch on” world of the computer. In September, 1970, the Association for Computing Machinery held the first major chess tournament for computers. It was called the North American Computer Chess Championship, and CHESS 3.0, a chess program from Northwestern University, won the championship.
Today, chess is taught to children in schools, and used in armies to train the minds of soldiers, cadets, and officers. In fact, many schools hold chess clubs and scholastic tournaments.

Distribution of the cards during a card game is known as “dealing”. A player who is chosen to deal the cards is called the “dealer”, and he will normally “shuffle” the deck before distributing them to the other players. There are various types of shuffling (such as the riffle, the Hindu shuffle, or the pile shuffle), but the main objective remains the same…to scramble the deck before distribution of the cards to the players of the game.
There are various types of card games that can be played with a deck of cards, separated into various categories. Accumulating games, like “Egyptian War”, revolves around the idea of acquiring all the cards in the deck. Comparing games, such as poker, blackjack, or baccarat, involves comparing the hands between the various players…with the player with the best hand winning the game. Solitaire games are designed to be played by one player, and are a good pastime when you are alone.

Scrabble is a “word game” in which the players of the game form words from individual lettered tiles, and place them on a 15×15 grid board game. In order for the words to be valid, they must appear in a standard dictionary. The game is sold in 121 countries, and available in 29 different languages. You can find a set in 1 out of 3 American homes.
The year was 1938. Architect Alfred Mosher Butts of Newtown, Connecticut, created a game called “Criss-Crosswords”, the fore-runner of Scrabble. In 1948 James Brunot (one of the few original owners of the game) bought the rights to manufacture the game, giving Butts a royalty on every game he sold. The next year Brunot and his family started to make the sets in a converted former schoolhouse in Dodgington. Although they made 2,400 sets that year, they lost money.
Legend states that things changed in 1952 when Jack Strauss, president of Macy’s Department Store, played the game while on vacation. He loved the game, and when he went back to work he was surprised that his store did not carry the product. He promptly placed a large order for the game, and within a year it was such a hit that “everyone had to have one”.
With the incredible influx of orders, Bruno was unable to meet the demand. He sold the manufacturing rights to Selchow and Righter in 1952. They went on to purchase the trademark to the game in 1972. In 1986 Selchow and Righter sold the game to Coleco, who went bankrupt soon afterwards. The rights to Scrabble were then purchased by Hasbro.
In 1984 Scrabble went from the board to the TV. In that year it became a daytime game show on the NBC network. Hosted by Chuck Woolery, it ran from July 1984 to March 1990, with a second run from January to June, 1993.

Desktop computers have been around for many years now. I have always liked my desktop computer, but now I think that I have actually been converted to the portable computer. Yes, the laptop is now my personal preference.
The Desktop computer is still my choice of companion when I am at the office, just for the simple facts that it has all the work data on it that is important to me. But once I am away from work I like to use my laptop again.
It is just so easy with my laptop to access all my favorite music and videos, even when I am out on the road.
There is however a down side to having my laptop with me all the time. When I have my laptop on for a long length of time, it does have a tendency to get rather hot, and if you have got your laptop resting on your legs at the time, it can get extremely uncomfortable.
There are also a few health issues regarding the prolonged use of laptops. I am not entirely convinced that these are true, but it does say that if you use the laptop for a great length of time it could have a profound effect on your sperm count. Now I must admit that this is worth thinking about.
With regards to the overheating problem of my laptop, I seriously thought that I may have to either alter how I use it or convert back to my desktop computer. The thought of using a laptop on a table all the time made me think that I may as well be on a desktop. What is the point of having a laptop if you are going to be sat at a table or desk with it? DS cards and the newer Nintendo DSi cards let users of these Nintendo handheld consoles play not only games, but also music and movies. The DSTT also holds a strange crown: it is the fastest loading DS card all the time! This is mainly because it’s slightly faster than the original R4.

It can keep popular for so long time, thanks to a team that goes on updating the firmware and compatibility for the card.
